What data is needed for having a valid BIS & Internet connection (3G, EDGE)?

This document created at Sep 14, 2016, 2:17:49 PM and modified at Mar 9, 2021, 5:08:02 AM.

Here you can learn about the BIS and what data is needed to have a valid BIS & Internet connection.

For having a valid BIS -often referred to as big EDGE or big 3G- a few conditions must be met.

  1. First of all you need a subscription from your operator for any BlackBerry service, most of the time it is a BIS.

  2. The phone should have the following data paired together and be valid on BlackBerry's server side:
    1. IMEI
    2. BB PIN
    3. BSN
    4. SHA1 RANDOM DATA

If any of this data will be changed (in case of an IMEI or PIN change) the BIS will be removed! Sometimes if you are doing a "lifetimer reset" or a "refurbish" function with ChimeraTool and the BIS patch is not available for the current model, then be warned, the BIS will be gone forever and cannot be recovered.

Let's see an example

BlackBerry IMEI label

Phone with valid data and working BIS:

  1. IMEI: 35550702723202
  2. BB PIN: 255C0113
  3. BSN: 1025657695
  4. SHA1 RANDOM DATA: 1c230ddcbd3400f94318a97bf00231853aaad678

Phone with invalid data and non-working BIS:

Example 1:

  1. IMEI: 35550702723202
  2. BB PIN: 255C0113
  3. BSN: 1025657695
  4. SHA1 RANDOM DATA: da39a3ee5e6b4b0d3255bfef95601890afd80709<- Random data has been changed

Example 2:

  1. IMEI: 35550702720000  <- IMEI number has been changed
  2. BB PIN: 255C0113
  3. BSN: 1025657695
  4. SHA1 RANDOM DATA: 1c230ddcbd3400f94318a97bf00231853aaad678

What is the BSN number?

The BSN is mostly called BlackBerry Serial Number, but we can refer to it as Board Serial Number too.

It is an unique serial number and helps to identify the mainboards during the manufacturing state. Serial number can not be changed, because this can cause problems while BIS usage.

What is the random number?

Random number is the soul of the whole BlackBerry security. While manufacturing, every board will receive a 60 character long random number. The phone will store the SHA1 value of this random number and will keep it safe. It will never be changed durimg the lifetime of the phone. This is also not known as RIM during manufacturing, and it will be registered only in the time of the first usage by the customer. By this method it is possible to prevent data cloning and the reading of others' emails,  and also messages if you know the PIN, or IMEI pair. This random number is stored in an EE field encrypted with an unique hardware key using BSIS security hardware. In the case that this data will be damaged you will be not able to use BIS, because a new number will be generated automatically by the phone and the old "valid" number will be replaced. After this happens, you lose the BIS service and it cannot be recovered. This fact is mostly unknown from the user side and, from our side, is just information to aid in the better understanding of how it all works.
